Discover more about Palais Présidentiel

The Palais Présidentiel, located in the heart of Abidjan's Plateau district, serves as the primary residence and office of the President of Côte d'Ivoire. Designed by architect Pierre Dufau, with assistance from Maurice Lafon, the palace was commissioned by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of Côte d'Ivoire, and inaugurated in 1962, shortly after the country gained independence. The palace complex includes the main building, the President's private residence, and ministerial offices, offering views of the Ébrié Lagoon. Its construction marked a significant moment in Ivorian architectural history, symbolizing the nation's sovereignty and aspirations for the future. The interior decoration was entrusted to renowned artists, including Bernard Buffet for paintings, René Collamarini for exterior sculptures, Louis Dideron for interior sculptures, and Jean Lurçat for tapestries. While Yamoussoukro became the political capital in 1983, the Palais Présidentiel in Abidjan remains the de facto residence of the head of state. Although not always open to the public, the palace is a significant landmark, representing Côte d'Ivoire's rich history and political power. Visiting during the week may offer a chance to witness the changing of the guard ceremony.
