The Plateau Mosque, or Grande Mosquée du Plateau, stands as a testament to modern Islamic architecture in the heart of Abidjan. Located in the bustling Plateau district, the mosque is a significant religious and cultural landmark. The mosque's construction began in 1996, with the first stone laid by President Henri Konan Bédié. Funding came from the state and various donors, including the ZEID Charity Foundation of the United Arab Emirates and the AGA-KHAN Foundation. Construction was halted for 18 years due to crisis, but resumed in 2007 thanks to a donation from Saudi Arabia. The mosque can accommodate 6,500 worshippers, with space for 3,500 on the esplanade and 3,000 in the prayer hall. A 65-meter minaret towers above the structure. The mosque has several levels, including twenty offices, shops, a library, and an amphitheater with 300 seats. A mezzanine provides space for 500 women. Non-Muslims can appreciate the exterior beauty and peaceful surroundings. Visitors should dress modestly, covering legs and shoulders, and women should wear a headscarf.
