Drežnik Old Town, a magnificent defensive fortress, dates back to the 12th century. For centuries, it played a vital role in protecting this part of Europe from Ottoman invasions. Due to its strategic importance, Drežnik frequently changed hands, each leaving its mark on the fortress walls. After 900 years, it proudly stands as a witness to the area's dynamic history.The Old Town's history can be divided into three architectural phases: Frankopan Castle (15th and 16th centuries), Ottoman Fortress (1592–1788), and Border Station (from 1788). Each phase reflects the changing military and social landscape of the region. The circular defense tower exemplifies 15th and 16th-century military architecture.Located in the Plitvice Valleys, the Municipality of Rakovica has undertaken efforts to protect and carefully restore this historical site. While the interior may not be accessible for exploration, the glade surrounding the fort is integrated into cycling, walking, and horseback riding trails, offering panoramic views of the Korana River and the surrounding landscape.
