If driving, navigate to Hum Košnički 1, 49216, Hum Košnički. From Zagreb, take the D206 road towards Krapina, then follow signs for Hum Košnički. Parking is available near the castle entrance. Be aware that parking is an open lot and can be crowded during peak season. There are no parking meters.
Public Transport

To reach Veliki Tabor by public transport from Zagreb, take a bus from Zagreb's main bus station to Desinić. Buses depart approximately every four hours. From Desinić, it is approximately a 3km walk to the castle. Alternatively, from the main bus station in Zagorje, take a bus to Pregrada, then a taxi to Veliki Tabor for approximately 70-90 HRK.

The castle's name, derived from the Croatian word 'tabor' meaning war camp, reflects its historical role as a fortification against Turkish invasions.The oldest part of the castle, the pentagonal tower, dates back to the mid-15th century and exhibits late Gothic architectural style. The castle complex evolved over time, with the addition of four semi-circular Renaissance towers connected by curtain walls in the 16th century. For centuries, Veliki Tabor was owned by the Rattkay noble family, who played a significant role in its construction and expansion.Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, including a prison, a school, and even a warehouse. Today, Veliki Tabor is a museum showcasing its rich history and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the castle's interior, admire its architecture, and learn about the legends that surround it. One such legend tells the tragic love story of Veronika Desinić, who was allegedly walled up within the castle. The museum also hosts ethnographic, geological, paleontological, and anthropological collections.Veliki Tabor hosts an international short film festival since 2002. The castle underwent extensive renovations, completed in 2011, to restore it to its former glory.
