Klis Fortress, or *Tvrđava Klis* as it's known locally, is a commanding medieval fortress that has guarded the region for over two thousand years. Strategically positioned in the mountain pass between Kozjak and Mosor mountains, it controlled access to Split and the Dalmatian coast.Originally built by the Illyrian tribe of Dalmatae in the 2nd century BC, the fortress has been expanded and modified by Romans, Croatians, Ottomans, Venetians, and Austrians, each leaving their mark on its architecture. For centuries, Klis stood as a crucial defense against invaders, most notably during the Ottoman wars. The fortress was briefly captured by the Ottomans in the mid-16th century, before being regained by the Christians who then repurposed the mosque as Saint Vitus Church. Visitors can explore the fortress's ramparts, gates, and towers, enjoying breathtaking views of Split and the surrounding islands. The site includes a small museum displaying arms, armor, and traditional uniforms, offering insights into the fortress's history.
