Discover more about Trakoscan Castle

Trakošćan Castle, one of Croatia's best-preserved and most visited castles, offers a captivating journey through time. Built in the late 13th century, it initially served as a small observation fortress within the northwestern Croatian defense system. Legend suggests its name derives either from a Thracian fort (Arx Thacorum) or the medieval Drachenstein knights. Over the centuries, the castle passed through various owners, including the Counts of Celje. In 1584, King Maximilian granted the estate to the Drašković family, who owned it for centuries. In the 19th century, the Drašković family restored the castle in the neo-Gothic style, transforming it into a residential manor reflecting the romantic spirit of the era. The surrounding grounds were converted into an English-style park with an artificial lake, enhancing the castle's fairytale setting. Today, Trakošćan Castle is a museum showcasing the Drašković family's lifestyle and Croatian history. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved interiors, including the knight's hall, chapel, library, and bedrooms, adorned with antique furniture, weaponry, and artwork. The castle also features collections of books, photographs, paintings and graphics, as well as portraits of the Drašković family. The surrounding parkland invites leisurely strolls along the lake and through the forest, offering breathtaking views of the castle and the Zagorje hills.
