Discover more about Lake Vrana

Nestled in the heart of Dalmatia, Lake Vrana (Vransko jezero) presents a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Stretching parallel to the Adriatic coast between Pakoštane and Pirovac, this expansive lake spans approximately 30 square kilometers, making it Croatia's largest natural lake. Separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, in some places only 800 meters wide, Lake Vrana offers a striking contrast between the azure waters of the Adriatic and the tranquil freshwater ecosystem of the lake. Declared a Nature Park in 1999, Lake Vrana is a haven for biodiversity, particularly its rich birdlife. The park's ornithological reserve, established in 1983, protects a vast reedbed that serves as a habitat for over 255 bird species, with 102 species nesting within its boundaries. Birdwatchers flock to the lake, especially during spring and autumn migrations, to observe a variety of species, including the pygmy cormorant and purple heron, which find their only remaining nesting place in Croatia here. Beyond its natural wonders, Lake Vrana boasts a rich history, with cultural and historical monuments dating back to 2000 years B.C. The fortified city of Vrana, once a significant center in medieval Croatia, was home to papal legates and later the Knights Templar. The ruins of the Vrana Fortress stand as a reminder of this area's strategic importance throughout history. Visitors can also explore Maškovića Han, a well-preserved example of Ottoman architecture, which served as an inn for travelers in the 17th century. Today, Lake Vrana Nature Park offers a variety of activities for visitors. Cyclists can explore the over 50 km of bike trails that encircle the lake, while hikers can venture along the park's numerous walking trails. Fishing is permitted in certain areas of the lake, providing opportunities to catch both freshwater and marine species. For those seeking adventure, the Lake Vrana Adventure Park offers climbing and ziplining activities. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or outdoor adventurer, Lake Vrana promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Dalmatia.
