Klis Fortress, or Tvrđava Klis, is a majestic medieval fortress located above the village of Klis, approximately 15 kilometers north of Split, Croatia. Its strategic position, nestled in a mountain pass between Mosor and Kozjak mountains, has made it a coveted stronghold for over two millennia. Originally built by the Illyrian tribe of Dalmatae in the 2nd century BC, the fortress has evolved through Roman, Croatian, Ottoman, Venetian, and Austrian rule. It served as a royal residence for Croatian kings in the 9th century and later became a vital defense against the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The fortress was famously defended by Petar Kružić and his Uskok soldiers for over two decades before falling to the Ottomans in 1537. The Venetians took over in 1648, and by the end of the 18th century, Klis fortress had lost its main strategic weight. Today, Klis Fortress is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a chance to explore its well-preserved walls, towers, and rooms. The fortress is also known for being a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones, where it stood in as the city of Meereen. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Split, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding islands.
