Discover more about Dominican Monastery

The Dominican Monastery, nestled within Dubrovnik's city walls, offers a captivating glimpse into the city's rich history and artistic heritage. Founded in 1225, construction of the current church and monastery complex continued into the 14th century, strategically reinforcing the city's defenses. The monastery's architecture showcases a harmonious blend of Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, and Renaissance styles. The monastery's museum displays an impressive collection of religious art, including paintings from the Dubrovnik School of the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as works by Venetian masters. Highlights include the recently restored painting by Titian, St. Blaise, Mary Magdalene and the angel Rafael, and a large crucifix by Paolo Veneziano. The library holds over 220 incunabula, illuminated manuscripts, and valuable historical documents. The peaceful cloister, designed by Florentine architect Maso di Bartolomeo, features graceful triple arches surrounding a lush garden with a 14th-century stone well. This well served as a vital water source for the city during the siege of Dubrovnik in 1991. Today, the Dominican Monastery stands as a testament to Dubrovnik's enduring cultural and architectural legacy.
