Discover more about Clock Tower of Dubrovnik

The Clock Tower of Dubrovnik, a majestic 31-meter-high structure, stands as a prominent landmark in the heart of the Old Town on Luža Square. Initially constructed in 1444, it has been an integral part of Dubrovnik's skyline for centuries, witnessing the city's evolution. The tower's strategic location made it a crucial watchtower, providing early warnings of potential threats. Over the years, the Clock Tower has endured significant damage from earthquakes, particularly the devastating 1667 Dubrovnik earthquake, and other seismic events. Due to the damage, the tower began to lean towards the Stradun, leading to its demolition and reconstruction in 1928, faithfully adhering to the original design. The 1979 Montenegro earthquake caused further damage, necessitating restoration work between 1987 and 1988. The tower features a bronze bell cast in 1506 by Ivan Rabljanin, a renowned Croatian bronze caster. The bell is struck on the hour by two mechanical figures known as Maro and Baro, or the 'zelenci' (Green Men), who have become beloved symbols of the city. The 'zelenci' are called such because of the green patina that has formed on the bronze over time. While the bell is original, the current 'zelenci' are replicas installed in 1929, with the originals displayed in the Museum of Cultural History in the Rector's Palace. Today, the Clock Tower symbolizes Dubrovnik's resilience and its ability to endure various challenges throughout history. Although visitors cannot access the interior, they can admire its architecture and historical significance from Stradun and the surrounding areas. The tower is located near other landmarks such as the Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise, making it a central point for exploring the Old Town. Its presence enhances the vibrant atmosphere of Luža Square, where locals and tourists gather, making it a must-see attraction in Dubrovnik.
