Discover more about Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac, often called 'Dubrovnik's Gibraltar,' is a formidable fortress strategically positioned just outside Dubrovnik's western city walls. Rising 37 meters above sea level, it has been a crucial defensive point for the city, guarding against both land and sea invasions. Legend has it that in the 11th century, the Venetians planned to build a fort on the same site to control Dubrovnik. However, the citizens of Dubrovnik learned of this plan and swiftly constructed their own fortress, thwarting the Venetian ambition. The fort was reportedly built in just three months. The inscription above the entrance, 'Non Bene Pro Toto Libertas Venditur Auro' ('Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures in the world'), reflects the city's unwavering commitment to freedom. The fortress has a triangular shape and is built on three levels with thick walls facing the sea (up to 12 meters) and thinner walls facing the city (60 cm), a design intended to prevent its own garrison from turning against Dubrovnik. Inside, there is an inner courtyard and a small chapel dedicated to St. Vro. Today, Fort Lovrijenac is a popular venue for theatrical performances, especially during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, with Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' being a traditional highlight. More recently, the fort has gained fame as the Red Keep in the HBO series 'Game of Thrones'. Visitors can explore the various filming locations and immerse themselves in the world of Westeros.
