Discover more about Walls of Dubrovnik

The Walls of Dubrovnik, often called the 'Pearl of the Adriatic,' are a testament to the city's rich history and strategic importance. Originally built in the 9th century, the walls were expanded and strengthened between the 12th and 17th centuries to protect the city from invaders. Today, they stand as one of the most iconic landmarks in Croatia, offering visitors a unique opportunity to walk through history. The walls stretch for 1,940 meters (6,360 feet), encircling most of the Old Town. At some points, the walls reach a height of 25 meters (82 feet), with a thickness of 4 to 6 meters on the land side and 1.5 to 3 meters on the sea side. Along the walls, you'll find 16 towers, 3 fortresses, 6 bastions, and other defensive structures that reflect the architectural styles of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The walk along the walls provides breathtaking views of the Old Town's terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic Sea, and the nearby Lokrum Island. Key points of interest include the Minceta Tower, the highest point of the walls, offering panoramic views; the Pile Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town; and the Fort Lovrijenac, a separate fortress perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the sea. Visitors can access the walls through three entrances: Pile Gate, Ploče Gate, and near St. Saviour Church. The best time to walk the walls is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The walk takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, allowing ample time to soak in the history and stunning scenery.
