Discover more about Orlando's Column

Orlando's Column, located in the heart of Dubrovnik's Old Town in Luža Square, is a powerful symbol of the city's historical independence and cultural identity. Erected in 1418, the stone column features a carving of Orlando, a legendary knight, who, according to popular belief, saved Dubrovnik from a 15-month siege by Saracen pirates in the 9th century. While the legend may not be entirely accurate, the column stands as a testament to the city's enduring spirit of freedom. The column was created by the local sculptor Antun Dubrovčanin and master sculptor Bonino di Milano. The statue portrays Orlando as a medieval warrior, clad in armor, holding a sword and shield. The column served multiple purposes throughout history. A platform at the top was used for public proclamations, legal decrees, and judicial sentences. The forearm of Orlando was also the standard measure of the Ragusan cubit, known as the 'lakat,' used by merchants for trade. This measurement is marked on the base of the column. Today, Orlando's Column continues to be a focal point of Dubrovnik's cultural life. During the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the Feast of St. Blaise, the Libertas flag is flown atop the column, symbolizing the city's independence. The column stands near other historical landmarks such as the City Bell Tower and St. Blaise's Church, making it an integral part of the Old Town's rich tapestry.
