Discover more about Saint Blaise War Ship

The Saint Blaise War Ship serves as a poignant reminder of Dubrovnik's enduring connection to the sea and its storied maritime past. While not a physical vessel that can be boarded, the site commemorates the vital role that ships played in the city's defense, especially during the tumultuous period of the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s. The monument pays tribute to the Armed Boats Squadron of Dubrovnik, a volunteer unit that bravely ran the naval blockade during the siege of the city in 1991-1992. This squadron, comprised of 23 lightly armed and armored vessels, was instrumental in maintaining a lifeline for the besieged population and troops, delivering essential supplies such as food, fuel, medical provisions, arms, and ammunition. The actions of the squadron, and particularly the vessel Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise), have become legendary in the city. Saint Blaise, or Sveti Vlaho as he is known locally, is the patron saint of Dubrovnik. According to legend, Saint Blaise appeared to warn the citizens of an impending Venetian attack in the 10th century, thus saving the city from conquest. Since then, he has been revered as the protector of Dubrovnik, and his image can be found throughout the city on monuments, artworks, and in literature. The Saint Blaise War Ship, therefore, carries a double significance, honoring both the city's patron saint and its naval defenders. Visiting the site offers a moment for reflection on the sacrifices made to protect Dubrovnik's freedom and independence. While there may not be specific exhibits or tours, the location itself provides a connection to the city's history and the spirit of its people.
