Discover more about Walls of Dubrovnik

The Walls of Dubrovnik, often called the 'Pearl of the Adriatic,' are a must-see attraction for any visitor to Croatia. These imposing stone walls, mostly constructed between the 13th and 17th centuries, encircle the entire Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A walk along the walls provides a unique perspective on the city's history, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the red-tiled rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic Sea, and the rugged coastline. Initially built in the 9th century, the walls were continuously strengthened and expanded over the centuries to protect the city from invaders. Today, the walls stretch for approximately 1,940 meters (6,360 feet) and reach a height of up to 25 meters (82 feet). The complex system includes the main city wall, sixteen towers, three fortresses, six bastions, and various other defensive structures. Key points of interest along the walls include the Minceta Tower, the highest point of the walls offering stunning views, and the forts of St. John and Bokar. Walking the entire circuit of the walls takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to admire the views. There are three entrances to the walls: Pile Gate, Ploče Gate, and near the Maritime Museum. The path along the walls is one-way (counterclockwise). Along the way, you'll find cafes where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. The best times to walk the walls are early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds, especially during the summer months.
