Discover more about Tvrđava Minčeta

Tvrđava Minčeta, dominating the northwestern side of Dubrovnik, is the city's highest point and a powerful symbol of its historic defense. The tower's name comes from the Menčetić family, who owned the land on which it was built. Originally constructed in 1319 as a four-sided fort by Nicifor Ranjina, the tower was significantly expanded in response to the Ottoman threat after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The initial design was updated by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, who built a round tower with six-meter thick walls and gun ports, adapting it to new warfare techniques. When Michelozzo's work was cut short, Juraj Dalmatinac completed the tower, adding its iconic Gothic crown. Visitors can climb the 750 steps to the top of Minčeta Tower for unparalleled views of Dubrovnik's Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. The fortress also houses historical exhibits, including a 16th-century cannon foundry in the Gornji Ugao (Upper Tower) area. Minčeta has also served as a filming location for the popular series *Game of Thrones*.
