Discover more about Franciscan Monastery Trsat

The Franciscan Monastery Trsat, located on Frankopanski Trg in Rijeka, is a captivating destination that combines history, spirituality, and stunning panoramic views. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and is the oldest sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Croatia. According to legend, the site's significance dates back to the miraculous transport of the Holy House of Nazareth to Trsat by angels in 1291. Although the house was later moved to Loreto, Italy, the Frankopan princes of Krk erected a church on the site, which eventually became the present-day monastery. The complex has been renovated and expanded over the centuries, with significant Baroque renovations taking place after a fire in 1629. Visitors can explore the monastery's serene cloisters, admire the beautiful frescoes, and visit the adjacent Church of Our Lady of Trsat, known for its elegant altar and collection of religious artifacts. The monastery also houses a museum showcasing religious items and historical manuscripts. The Chapel of Votive Gifts displays tokens of gratitude from pilgrims, while the treasury on the first floor contains valuable artistic pieces. The monastery library holds a collection of books, manuscripts and musical scores. Trsat itself offers more than just the monastery. Trsat Castle, located nearby, provides a strategically important observation point with views of the Rječina gorge. The Petar Kružić staircase, built in 1531, leads from the city center to the monastery and is adorned with chapels.
