Today, it serves as a historical landmark and offers visitors stunning panoramic views of the town, the Adriatic Sea, and the Pakleni Islands. The fortress also houses the Hvar Observatory.

Getting there

Walking

The Napoleon Fortress is accessible via a walking trail from Hvar Town. Start at the main square (Trg Sv. Stjepana) and head east towards the waterfront promenade (Riva). Walk along the Riva until you reach the marina. Continue past the marina, following signs for 'Napoleon Fortress' or 'Fortica'. The trail begins at the base of the hill and is marked with signs. The hike is steep and takes approximately 30 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes.

Public Transport

To reach the trailhead by public transport, take a local bus from Hvar Town to Vrboska. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes and costs approximately 33 HRK. From Vrboska, walk back towards Hvar Town to find the trail leading to Napoleon Fortress. Look for signs directing you to Fortica, as the trailhead is located along that route. The hike from the trailhead to Napoleon will take about 30 minutes. Check the bus schedule in advance for return trips to Hvar Town.

Taxi

You can take a taxi from Hvar Town to the trailhead of the Napoleon Fortress. From the town center, take the road leading north. Follow the signs for the Hvar Fortress (Fortica) and continue past the parking area. There will be a sign indicating the trail to Napoleon. The drive takes about 10 minutes. From the parking area, it's a short hike (approximately 30 minutes) to reach Napoleon. Taxi fares in Hvar start at 5.00 HRK per km. A minimum fare from a taxi rank for journeys up to 6 kilometers is 150,00 HRK.

Nestled on the hills above Hvar, the Napoleon Fortress stands as a testament to the island's strategic military architecture of the 19th century. Built during the Napoleonic Wars under French rule, the fortress was designed to protect the island from potential invaders. The entire population of the island was forced to build the fortification with minimum wages. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors eager to explore its history and enjoy the panoramic views.As you ascend the winding paths to the fortress, glimpses of beautiful landscapes, including the azure Adriatic Sea and the lush green islands scattered along the coast, will be visible. Once at the fortress, take in the breathtaking panoramas from various vantage points. The red-roofed buildings of Hvar contrasted against the deep blue waters create a stunning view.Visitors can explore remnants of the historical structures within the fortress, providing insights into the military strategies of the time, as well as the lifestyle of soldiers stationed there. The fortress also houses the Hvar Observatory, a research outpost devoted to astrophysics. The observatory is not open to the public. The fortress is not only a historical site but also a place where visitors can reflect on the island's evolution throughout the centuries.
