Discover more about Fortica Fortress

Fortica Fortress, or Španjola (Spanish Fortress), is a prominent landmark overlooking Hvar Town, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's layered past and breathtaking views. The fortress stands on the site of an ancient Illyrian settlement dating back to before 500 BC. The Byzantines established a citadel here in the 6th century, followed by the Venetians who commenced construction of the current fortress in 1278. The fortress was significantly reinforced in 1551, a move that proved crucial in 1571 when it provided refuge for Hvar's inhabitants during a Turkish invasion. In 1579, disaster struck when a lightning strike ignited a gunpowder magazine, causing extensive damage. The fortress was subsequently repaired in the early 17th century, with the addition of Baroque defensive bastions. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, under Austrian rule, Fortica received further enhancements, resulting in its present-day appearance. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved fortress complex, which once included towers, battlements, cannons, a prison, and a chapel. Inside, a small museum displays artifacts from Hvar's history, including ancient amphorae recovered from shipwrecks. A café bar and souvenir shop are also located within the fortress. The main draw remains the panoramic vista encompassing Hvar Town, the Adriatic Sea, and the Pakleni Islands.
