Discover more about Škor square

Škor Square, or Trg Veli Škor, is the most picturesque of Stari Grad's many little squares. Formed during the 17th and 18th centuries on what was once a shallow stretch of water, it served as a shipyard, lending the square its name. The word 'škor' comes from 'škver,' the Dalmatian term for shipyard. Surrounded by characteristic Dalmatian houses, complete with luminari (skylights) and sulars (stone terraces with stairs), the square exudes the charm of mythical Dalmatia. The architecture reflects Renaissance, Baroque, and folk styles, a testament to the island's layered history. Once home to nobles, it later housed the working class. Today, Škor Square is a protected cultural site and a vibrant hub. It serves as a backdrop for summer cultural events, including concerts, poetry readings, and wine tastings. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, explore the quaint cafes, and soak in the local ambiance.
