Fortica Fortress, locally known as Španjola (Spanish Fortress), is a prominent landmark offering a captivating blend of history and stunning panoramic views. Constructed in the 16th century during Venetian rule, the fortress stands as a testament to Hvar's strategic importance and rich history. Originally built to protect Hvar Town from attacks, Fortica's foundations lie on ancient fortifications dating back to the first millennium BC. The fortress provided refuge for the local population during the Turkish invasion in 1571. Severely damaged in 1579 by a gunpowder explosion, it was later repaired in the early 17th century with Baroque defense bastions. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved stone structures, discover historical exhibits featuring artifacts from Hvar's past, including ancient amphorae recovered from shipwrecks. The fortress complex includes towers, loopholes, cannons, a prison, corridors and a chapel. The site also offers a cafe and souvenir shop. The panoramic views from the fortress walls are unparalleled, encompassing Hvar Town, the Adriatic Sea, and the Pakleni Islands. Visiting at sunset is highly recommended for a magical experience.
