Discover more about Hvar City Walls

The Hvar City Walls are a remarkable historical landmark that stands as a testament to the island's rich heritage and strategic importance throughout the centuries. Constructed in the 13th century under Venetian rule, the walls were designed to protect the city from invaders. Over the years, they have been expanded and modified, most notably in the 15th century, to adapt to changing military technologies. Walking along the walls, visitors can appreciate the intricate stonework and defensive towers that once housed soldiers. The walls feature a battlement with crenellations and loopholes, and four towers. The city walls have four gates: the southwestern gate is the main gate - Porta Maestra, the southeastern gate across from the Bishop's Palace is known as the gate of the Virgin Mary, the western gate as Gojave, and the eastern gate as Gradno vrota. Beyond their historical significance, the walls offer breathtaking panoramic views. From this vantage point, the vibrant red rooftops of Hvar's old town contrast beautifully with the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. Informational plaques along the route provide insights into the history and significance of the walls.
