Discover more about St. Stephen's Cathedral

St. Stephen's Cathedral, dedicated to the patron saint of Hvar, is a captivating blend of architectural styles reflecting the island's rich history. The cathedral stands on the eastern side of St. Stephen Square (also known as Pjaca), the largest square in Dalmatia, marking the meeting point of two parts of the city. Originally built on the foundations of a 6th-century Christian church and a later Benedictine convent, the cathedral evolved over centuries. It gained its present appearance between the 16th and 18th centuries, incorporating Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque elements with Romanesque influences evident in the bell tower design. The cathedral was rebuilt and expanded over the centuries, with significant contributions from local builders. The structure suffered damage during a Turkish invasion in 1571 but was subsequently restored. The cathedral's interior features a triple-aisled basilica design with a square shrine and Renaissance sanctuary. Inside, visitors can admire a 15th-century pulpit, stone polyptychs of St. Luke and The Flagellation of Christ, and a late Gothic crucifix. The nine Baroque altars from the 17th century are adorned with paintings by Venetian artists. The exterior boasts a recognizable Renaissance bell tower, considered one of the finest in Dalmatia. The late Renaissance facade features a three-cornered gable symbolizing the Holy Trinity. Today, St. Stephen's Cathedral remains a focal point of Hvar's spiritual and cultural life, drawing visitors with its historical significance and architectural beauty.
