Discover more about Nesactium

Nesactium, also known as Nezakcij in Croatian and Vizače in the Istrian dialect, is an ancient archaeological site located in southern Istria, Croatia, near the villages of Muntić and Valtura. This historical landmark was once the capital of the Histri, an Iron Age people who inhabited the Istrian peninsula. The site's strategic location on Glavica hill, overlooking a fertile valley and the Budava Bay, made it a significant settlement throughout history. Nesactium's history dates back to the Bronze and Iron Ages, with the oldest traces of settlement found from that era. The Histri, believed to be connected to the prehistoric Castellieri culture, established Nesactium as their main political and religious center. The town's steep hills provided a natural defense, and it was further fortified by multiple layers of walls. The Histri were known for their trade and piracy in the Mediterranean Sea, and were once ruled by King Epulon. In 177 BC, the Romans conquered and destroyed Nesactium after a long siege. However, the town was rebuilt and became a Roman settlement, with a forum, baths, temples, and basilicas. Nesactium remained inhabited until the 6th century when it was destroyed during barbarian invasions. Today, visitors can explore the archaeological park, which features conserved architectural remains from the Roman and Late Antiquity periods, including walls, gates, and a necropolis.
