Discover more about Botanical garden

The Makarska Botanical Garden, also known as the Kotišina Botanical Garden, offers a tranquil escape into nature, located just above the town of Makarska. Situated on the slopes of Biokovo Mountain, this unique garden is not a botanical garden in the traditional sense, but rather a 'fenced part of nature' dedicated to preserving the native flora of the region. Founded in 1984 by Franciscan friar and scientist Jure Radić, the garden aims to showcase the biodiversity of Biokovo in miniature. Covering 3.5 hectares, it features diverse habitats, from rocky cliffs and scree slopes to cultivated areas and the Proslap canyon. Visitors can explore over 300 wild plant species, ranging from Mediterranean herbs to mountain flora, with several endemic species to Biokovo. The garden also features remnants of architectural heritage, including a 17th-century fortress called Veliki Kaštel, now an Interpretation Center, and the vault of St. Anthony, built in the early 20th century. Several walking trails with educational boards guide visitors through the garden, providing insights into the local flora and the region's natural and cultural heritage. The garden is most vibrant in spring and early summer, but offers interest throughout the year.
