The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, or Katedrala Svetog Duje, stands as a powerful symbol of Split's layered history. Originally constructed as the mausoleum of Roman Emperor Diocletian in 305 AD, it was converted into a cathedral in the 7th century. This transformation represents a fascinating blend of ancient Roman architecture and Christian religious heritage.The cathedral complex consists of the church itself, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower, dedicated to Saint Domnius. The bell tower is about 60 meters high and was built throughout around three centuries, which is visible in different styles of its floors. Visitors can climb the bell tower for panoramic views of Split and the Adriatic Sea.Inside, the cathedral retains much of its original Roman structure. The octagonal shape of the mausoleum is still evident, and some of the original columns remain. The walnut doors at the main entrance, carved in 1214 by Andrija Buvina, depict 28 scenes from the life of Christ. The interior also features a Romanesque pulpit from the 13th century and altars dedicated to Saint Domnius and Saint Anastasius. The Crypt of St. Lucy, located under the cathedral, is a small crypt with a chapel dedicated to St Lucy.The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is not only a religious site but also a cultural monument.
