Trg svetog Stjepana (Pjaca), also known as St. Stephen's Square, is the vibrant heart of Hvar, Croatia, embodying the town's rich history and cultural significance. The rectangular square extends from the harbor to St. Stephen's Cathedral, creating a large open space that has served as the center of Hvar life for centuries.Originally, the area was a deep inlet, with the sea reaching as far as the present-day cathedral. Over time, the inlet was filled in to create a space between two fortified towns, Grode to the north and Burg to the south. The square gradually took shape, with the cathedral on the east side and Mandrač (a small harbor) on the west. By the 15th century, Pjaca was largely formed, though initially wider and bordered by gardens. Due to space constraints within the fortified town, residents began building houses on the northern edge of the square, outside the town walls.Today, Trg svetog Stjepana is lined with beautifully preserved Renaissance and Baroque architecture, reflecting the Venetian influence that shaped Hvar's history. The Cathedral of St. Stephen, with its intricate details and bell tower, dominates the eastern side of the square. Visitors can climb the bell tower for panoramic views of Hvar and the surrounding area. A historic well, built in 1520 and adorned with a wrought-iron grille from 1780, is hidden among the umbrellas of the restaurants near the cathedral. The square is a lively gathering place, bustling with activity, especially during the summer months. Cafes, restaurants, and shops line the square, offering local delicacies, artisanal crafts, and opportunities for people-watching. Trg svetog Stjepana also hosts local events, performances, and markets, providing a glimpse into Hvar's cultural life. In the evenings, the square transforms into a magical setting, illuminated by soft lights and filled with music and laughter.
