Overview

Netto Bar, a Curaçaoan institution since 1954, is more than just a place to grab a drink; it's a living testament to the island's rich history and vibrant culture. Founded by Ernesto "Netto" Koster in the Otrobanda district of Willemstad, the bar has remained a beloved gathering spot for locals and tourists alike for over seven decades. Stepping into Netto Bar is like stepping back in time. The interior is a captivating collage of Curaçaoan memorabilia, with walls plastered with stickers, flags, banners, license plates, and photographs that tell the story of the bar's enduring legacy. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, fostering a sense of community that transcends social barriers. Here, you'll find locals engaging in lively conversations, tourists soaking in the authentic Curaçaoan vibe, and everyone united by a shared appreciation for good company and unique libations. The star of the show at Netto Bar is undoubtedly the Ròm Bèrdè, or Green Rum. This mysterious concoction, made with a secret blend of herbs and spices, is a closely guarded recipe passed down through generations of the Koster family. The Green Rum is a staple among Curaçaoan men and is considered a 100% homegrown product only found on Curaçao. Its distinctive flavor is both intriguing and addictive, making it a must-try for any visitor seeking an authentic taste of the island. While the exact recipe remains a secret, the experience of savoring this unique spirit in the heart of Netto Bar is an experience you won't soon forget. Netto Bar's location in Otrobanda adds to its charm and appeal. Otrobanda, meaning "the other side" in Papiamentu, is a historic district known for its colorful buildings, narrow streets, and vibrant street art. Once considered the working-class heart of Willemstad, Otrobanda has undergone a revitalization in recent years, transforming into a cultural hub that celebrates the island's artistic expression. A stroll through Otrobanda's streets is a feast for the senses, with vibrant murals adorning building facades, local shops showcasing handcrafted goods, and the sounds of music and laughter filling the air. Breedestraat, the main commercial street in Otrobanda, is where Netto Bar is located. The street itself is a vibrant thoroughfare that encapsulates the essence of Caribbean culture and heritage. With its charming pastel-colored buildings and cobbled streets, this iconic street offers visitors a unique glimpse into the island's history and architectural beauty. As you stroll along Breedestraat, you will encounter a delightful mix of shops, galleries, and cafes, each brimming with local crafts, art, and culinary delights that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the island. Netto Bar has also played a significant role in Curaçao's carnival celebrations for decades. Its prime location on Breedestraat offers visitors a perfect vantage point to enjoy the vibrant parades that pass through the city. During carnival, the bar comes alive with music, dancing, and revelry, creating an unforgettable experience for all who participate. Over the years, Netto Bar has welcomed a diverse clientele, from local fishermen and dockworkers to international celebrities and dignitaries. Even Prince Willem Alexander visited the bar in 1999! The bar's enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to transcend social boundaries and create a welcoming space for all. Whether you're seeking a taste of authentic Curaçaoan culture, a place to connect with locals, or simply a unique and memorable drinking experience, Netto Bar is a must-visit destination in Willemstad. While in Curaçao, be sure to explore the other attractions the island has to offer. Visit the colorful Handelskade waterfront in Punda, explore the historic Pietermaai District, or relax on one of Curaçao's many pristine beaches. But no trip to Curaçao is complete without a visit to Netto Bar, where you can raise a glass of Green Rum and toast to the enduring spirit of this Caribbean gem. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, Netto Bar promises an unforgettable glimpse into the soul of Curaçao. It's a place where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the unique flavor of the island comes to life in every sip. So, pull up a chair, order a Ròm Bèrdè, and prepare to be captivated by the magic of Netto Bar.
