Discover more about Fort Nassau

Fort Nassau, officially known as Fort Oranje Nassau, stands as a testament to Curaçao's rich history and strategic importance. Constructed in 1797, the fort was initially named Fort Republiek before being captured by the British in 1807 and renamed Fort George. In 1816, when the island was returned to the Dutch, it was renamed Fort Orange Nassau. Strategically located on a 68-meter-high hill, Fort Nassau offers commanding views of Willemstad and its harbor. The fort played a crucial role in defending Curaçao from enemy attacks throughout its history. Although it saw action against an English invasion in 1807, it primarily served as a preventive measure. In 1959, the fort was declared a National Monument, and since then, it has been repurposed into a restaurant. Today, visitors can dine within the fort's historic walls, enjoying international cuisine with a Caribbean twist while taking in the breathtaking panoramic views. The canons along the fort walls, the former fort prison, and the primitive toilet used by the soldiers serve as reminders of the fort's past. The site also houses Harbor Control, which plays a vital role for the harbor. Visiting Fort Nassau offers a unique blend of history, gastronomy, and stunning scenery. Whether you're interested in exploring the fort's historical significance, savoring a delicious meal, or simply enjoying the panoramic views, Fort Nassau is a must-see destination in Curaçao.
