Discover more about Villa of Theseus

The Villa of Theseus, situated in the Paphos Archaeological Park, stands as a testament to the grandeur of Roman Cyprus. Constructed in the second half of the 2nd century AD atop the ruins of earlier Hellenistic and Roman structures, this expansive villa is believed to have been the residence of the Roman proconsul or governor. The villa remained in use until the 7th century AD. The villa derives its name from the stunning mosaic depicting Theseus's battle against the Minotaur, a highlight among the villa's numerous well-preserved mosaic floors. These mosaics, considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean, offer a glimpse into the rich mythology and artistry of the Roman period. Besides the iconic Theseus mosaic, visitors can also admire depictions of Poseidon and Amphitrite, as well as Achilles' first bath. Covering a vast area, the Villa of Theseus comprises over 100 rooms arranged around a central courtyard. These rooms were divided into official and private spaces, reflecting the dual role of the villa as both a residence and a center of governance. While only the southern half of the villa has been fully excavated, the visible remains offer a captivating glimpse into the daily life and artistic tastes of Roman Cyprus.
