Dating back to 1571, when the Ottomans conquered Cyprus, the area was initially designated as a cemetery for Ottoman soldiers. It served this purpose until the end of the 17th century. The cemetery is located near Kyrenia Castle and St. Andrew's Church.Over time, the cemetery expanded to include non-military local people. In the 19th century, it became a public burial ground for the homeless and destitute. The graveyard once covered a large area, but today only a small part remains. The site features cisterns, water canals and architectural tombs. A 'Turbe' (mausoleum) of the Garrison Commander of the Ottomans is located in the graveyard.Today, the Ottoman Baldöken Cemetery functions as an open-air museum. Visitors can explore the historic tombs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The site provides a glimpse into the island's Ottoman heritage and offers a quiet escape from the bustling city.
