Discover more about Tower of Rigena

The Tower of Rigena, or Pyrgos tis Rigenas, stands as a testament to Cyprus's rich medieval past. Located near the village of Perivolia, this small, square stone tower dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries during the Venetian era. Situated on a low hill, about two kilometers north of Cape Kiti, it also is known as the Tower of Kiti. Originally built as an observatory, the tower formed part of a network of watchtowers along the southern coast of Cyprus, designed to monitor sea traffic and guard against Arab raids. A small guard was stationed here to send signals, via lit torches, to military authorities in Larnaca. The tower's architecture reflects its military purpose, withstanding the test of time. At the centre of the tower, there were once three Venetian coats of arms, with the central one depicting the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of the Venetian Republic. Local legends intertwine with the tower's history, one suggesting that the goddess Aphrodite admired Rigena bathing in the area's clean waters and decided to bathe there as well. The tower was listed as a protected monument in 1905, and maintenance work began in 1911. Today, visitors can explore this historical landmark, soaking in the panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline and surrounding countryside.
