History of Machairas Mountains
-
Machairas Monastery, one of Cyprus's most significant religious sites, was founded in the 12th century. According to legend, two hermits, Neophytos and Ignatios, discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been painted by St. Luke and hidden in a cave. The icon, found with the aid of a divine light, inspired the construction of the monastery, which became a center of Orthodox Christian worship and pilgrimage.
-
During the Ottoman rule of Cyprus from 1571 to 1878, the Machairas Mountains and its monastery played a crucial role in maintaining Greek Orthodox traditions and culture. The monastery served as a refuge and a center of education, preserving Greek language and customs in a time of foreign dominance. It was during this period that the monastery's scriptorium became renowned for its manuscripts and religious texts.
-
Machairas Monastery was a center of resistance during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830). The monks and local population supported the struggle against Ottoman rule, providing shelter and resources to fighters. The monastery's involvement in the war underscored its importance not only as a religious institution but also as a symbol of national identity and resistance.
-
Under British rule from 1878 to 1960, the Machairas Mountains saw significant changes. The British administration improved infrastructure, including roads and communication networks, making the region more accessible. Despite these developments, the monastery continued to be a spiritual hub, and the local population maintained their cultural and religious practices. The monastery also supported the Enosis movement, which sought the union of Cyprus with Greece.
-
During the 1955-1959 EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston) struggle against British rule, the Machairas Mountains became a stronghold for the guerrilla fighters. The rugged terrain provided an ideal hiding place for the EOKA members, including the legendary fighter Grigoris Afxentiou. Afxentiou, who was eventually surrounded and killed by British forces in a cave near the monastery, became a national hero. His sacrifice is commemorated with a monument near the site of his last stand.
-
Today, the Machairas Mountains and its monastery continue to be a place of pilgrimage and cultural heritage. The area is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, who come to explore its natural beauty and historical significance. The monastery remains active, with monks maintaining their religious duties and welcoming visitors. The region is also known for its traditional crafts, such as wood carving and icon painting, which are preserved and showcased in local workshops and museums.
