    Discover more about Kyrenia Mountains

The Kyrenia Mountains, or Beşparmak Mountains (meaning "Five Finger Mountains" in Turkish, a reference to a distinctive peak), are a defining natural landmark in Northern Cyprus. This rugged range extends for over 170 kilometers, running parallel to the coast and offering a dramatic backdrop to the island's northern shores. Geologically, the range is primarily composed of hard crystalline limestone and marble, formed over millions of years by the collision of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. This collision created the folds and faults that give the mountains their jagged appearance. Mount Selvili is the highest peak at 1,024 meters (3,360 feet), offering panoramic views. The mountains have been strategically important throughout history. The Byzantines and Lusignans built watchtowers and castles along the peaks, including St. Hilarion, Buffavento, and Kantara castles. These castles were vital for defense and controlling mountain passes. Today, they are popular tourist attractions. The Kyrenia Mountains are also home to diverse plant and animal life. Maquis shrubland covers the lower slopes, with evergreen oaks, carob trees, and junipers. Higher up, pine forests dominate, with Calabrian pine as the main species. Several endemic plant species, including the Cyprus tulip, can also be found. Legends also enrich the mountains' allure. One story tells of a villager who threw mud at a queen, with the mud landing on the mountains and forming the five-fingered peak.
