Discover more about Büyük Han

Büyük Han, meaning "Great Inn" in Turkish, stands as a remarkable testament to Cyprus's layered history. Constructed in 1572 by the Ottomans shortly after seizing the island from the Venetians, this caravanserai provided lodging for travelers and merchants. The building's design, modeled after Koza Han in Bursa, reflects classic Ottoman architectural principles. Throughout its history, Büyük Han has served various purposes. Under British rule, it was repurposed as a prison from 1892 to 1903. Later, it provided refuge for poor families. In the 1990s, a comprehensive restoration transformed it into a thriving arts center. Today, Büyük Han is a hub of cultural activity. Visitors can explore the inner courtyard, admire the stone arches, and discover the small mosque with its ablutions fountain. The ground floor, once stables and storage, now hosts cafes and artisan shops selling locally sourced crafts. The upper level, originally sleeping quarters, houses galleries and workshops. Cultural events, including music performances and art exhibitions, are frequently held, especially during the summer.
