Discover more about Lefkara square

Lefkara Square is the vibrant heart of Pano Lefkara, a village celebrated for its rich cultural heritage and stunning surroundings. As you step onto the cobblestone streets, you're greeted by traditional Cypriot architecture, with narrow streets and stone houses adorned with flowers. This picturesque setting serves as the social and cultural hub of the village, where locals gather. The square's development began during British rule in the early 20th century, with the construction of a school, public buildings, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Paraskevi. The square is intertwined with the crafts that have made Lefkara famous: lace-making and silversmithing. Legend says that Leonardo da Vinci visited Lefkara in the 15th century and purchased a lace altar cloth for the Milan Cathedral. Lefkara lace, known as "Lefkaritika," has been produced in the village since Venetian times, combining local techniques with Greek and Byzantine patterns. In 2009, Lefkara lace was added to the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage items. Today, Lefkara Square remains a hub for traditional crafts. Artisan workshops line the square, where craftspeople create intricate lace patterns and delicate silver filigree jewelry. The annual Lefkara Festival, held each August, showcases the village’s cultural heritage through music, dance, theatre, and handicraft exhibitions. A commemorative plaque honors Vassos Lyssarides, a physician, politician, and native of Lefkara.
