Discover more about Venetian Column

Standing proudly in Atatürk Square (Sarayönü), the Venetian Column is a striking monument that encapsulates centuries of Nicosia's complex history. The column's origins trace back to the ancient Temple of Zeus in Salamis, from where it was moved to Nicosia in 1489 during the Venetian rule of Cyprus. Contrary to popular belief, the column itself isn't Venetian; it predates their reign, with roots in classical antiquity. Initially, the Venetians topped the column with the Lion of Saint Mark, a symbol of their authority, and adorned its base with the coats of arms of six noble Venetian families. However, in 1570, when the Ottomans seized control, they removed the lion and toppled the column. The column lay in the courtyard of the Sarayönü Mosque for centuries until 1915, when the British re-erected it during their rule. Lacking the original lion, the British replaced it with a bronze globe and inscribed the pedestal with the dates of its fall (1550) and resurrection (1915). Today, the Venetian Column stands as a testament to Cyprus's multifaceted colonial past. The surrounding Atatürk Square is a historical hub, featuring remnants from the Ottoman and British periods, including a fountain and a platform built for Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953. Exploring this landmark offers a compelling glimpse into the island's rich heritage.
