Discover more about The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios - Ethnological Museum

The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, also known as the Ethnological Museum, stands as a remarkable example of urban architecture from the final century of Ottoman rule in Nicosia. Located near the Archbishopric in the Saint Antonios neighborhood, where wealthy Greek Cypriots traditionally resided, this mansion offers a glimpse into the life of a dragoman, an official interpreter for the Sultan's Council. Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, who lived in the house between 1793 and 1808, was a prominent figure who amassed considerable wealth and power through his position. Built in 1793, the two-story building features local sandstone and a distinctive architectural plan resembling the Greek letter "Π," surrounding a central garden with a fountain and a hammam (Turkish bath). The ground floor housed the servants' quarters and kitchen, while the upper floor contained the reception hall, living areas, and an elaborately decorated official reception room. Today, the mansion functions as a museum, displaying artifacts and exhibits that showcase Cypriot ethnology. Although the furnishings are not original to the house, they represent the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering insights into the lifestyle of the period. The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios received the Europa Nostra award in 1988 for its exemplary renovation work.
