    Discover more about Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle, located on the western edge of Paphos Harbour, is a striking monument with a rich and varied history. Originally a Byzantine fortress designed to protect the harbor, the castle has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Cyprus. Initially built to defend against Arab invaders and pirates, the fort was destroyed by an earthquake in 1222. The Lusignans rebuilt and expanded it in the 13th century, and the Venetians later dismantled it in the 16th century fearing an Ottoman invasion. The Ottomans reconstructed the castle in 1592, incorporating elements of the Frankish tower and Venetian additions. An inscription above the entrance commemorates this restoration. Over the centuries, Paphos Castle has served various purposes. The Ottomans used the lower floors as a prison, while the upper level housed cannons to defend the harbor. In 1878, when the British took control of Cyprus, the castle became a salt warehouse until 1935 when it was declared an Ancient Monument. Today, visitors can explore the castle's central courtyard, climb to the rooftop battlements for panoramic views, and see the small rooms that once served as prison cells. The castle also hosts cultural events, including the Paphos Aphrodite Festival, which features opera performances in the courtyard.
