Discover more about Local Archaeological Museum of Kourion

The Local Archaeological Museum of Kourion, situated in the village of Episkopi, approximately 14 kilometers west of Limassol, serves as a captivating gateway to the ancient Kingdom of Kourion. The museum is housed in a traditional building, completed in 1937, that was once the private residence of George McFadden, who dedicated his life to archaeological research in Kourion from 1934 until his death in 1953. In 1969, McFadden's former home was transformed into the regional museum. The museum comprises two exhibition halls, each meticulously curated to showcase different phases of the Kourion region's history. The first hall provides an overview of the area's earliest inhabitants, displaying finds from Bronze Age settlements and tombs discovered in Episkopi, Sotira, and Erimi. These artifacts offer glimpses into the lives of Cyprus's ancient peoples, their tools, pottery, and burial rituals. The main exhibition room focuses on later periods, from the Cypro-Geometric era to Roman times. Visitors can marvel at finds from the Kaloriziki and Ayios Ermogenis cemeteries, offering insights into the burial customs and social structures of Kourion's inhabitants. One of the museum’s most poignant exhibits includes the skeletal remains of Kourion residents who perished during the catastrophic earthquakes of the 4th century AD. Discovered in a Roman house, these remains offer an intimate glimpse into the city's final moments. The museum also features a collection of offerings from the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, providing valuable information about the religious beliefs and practices of the Kourion people.
