Discover more about Troodos Botanical Garden

The Troodos Botanical Garden, officially named the Troodos Botanical Garden “A.G. Leventis,” is located within the Troodos National Forest Park near the abandoned Amiantos asbestos mine, at an altitude of 1,400 meters. Opened in 2010, it is part of the Natura 2000 protected area. The garden serves as a restoration project for the mine and focuses on the conservation and promotion of Cypriot botanical heritage, especially the native flora of the Troodos region. The garden is divided into thematic sections, including Endemic Plants, Riverine Vegetation, Arboretum, and Aromatic and Traditional Garden Plants. Visitors can explore common, rare, and endangered flora species. The Endemic Plants section promotes the unique flora of the Troodos Mountains, featuring species like the Cyprus cedar and golden oak. The Riverine Vegetation area includes native, endemic, and foreign species around two ponds connected by a waterfall. The Arboretum displays a variety of trees, such as Calabrian and black pine, Cyprus cedar, and giant sequoia. The garden also features a visitor center with a reception area, exhibit hall, video and lecture room, and a herbarium with samples of Troodos plants. Exhibits include a garden diagram, a documentary on the flora, an image representation of the vertical distribution of vegetation, an electronic database of Cypriot flora, and the history of the Amiantos mine. Visitors can study fresh and dry plants using stereoscopes. The garden provides a viewpoint with a telescope for observing the surrounding landscape. Open to the public, the Troodos Botanical Garden offers a year-round experience, with each season providing a unique perspective on the region's flora. It serves as a vital center for research and conservation, contributing to the ecological restoration and providing a recreational space for visitors to connect with nature.
