Discover more about Church of Panagia of Sintis

The Church of Panagia of Sintis, or Monastery of Panagia tou Sinti, is an Orthodox monastery dating back to the Venetian rule in Cyprus. Located near the village of Pentalia in the Paphos District, the monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is considered one of the most important buildings from the Venetian period. Historical evidence suggests the monastery was likely founded in the 16th century. The church features a single-aisled structure, monastic cells, and auxiliary spaces surrounding a courtyard with a central well. Its architecture showcases a blend of Byzantine and Venetian influences, including an octagonal dome with four windows that allow natural light to illuminate the interior. The monastery was inhabited by monks until 1927 before being abandoned. In 1993, the Monastery of Kykkos initiated a comprehensive restoration project, completed in 1997, to preserve the architectural and artistic heritage. The restoration earned the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Sinti the Europa Nostra Award in 1998, recognizing the use of good restoration techniques and the preservation of the original character. Today, the monastery is under the protection of UNESCO. Visitors can explore the well-preserved central nave and admire the intricate stonework and faded frescoes. The surrounding landscape, characterized by the Xeros River valley and the Troodos Mountains, enhances the serene atmosphere.
