Discover more about Makarounas Vineyards

Makarounas Vineyards offers a unique glimpse into the modern Cypriot winemaking scene, deeply rooted in family tradition. Established in 2016 by Theodoros Makarounas, a UC Davis graduate in Oenology and Viticulture, the winery carries on a four-generation legacy of grape cultivation in Letymbou. This "vine village," as locals call it, boasts a long history of viticulture, making it the perfect setting for Makarounas's commitment to quality and terroir. Makarounas distinguishes itself by being the only winery in Cyprus to source grapes solely from its privately-owned vineyards. This allows for complete control over fruit quality, resulting in wines that express the unique characteristics of the land. The winery focuses on indigenous Cypriot grape varieties, including Xynisteri, Morokanella, Spourtiko, and Promara for whites, and Maratheftiko, Yiannoudi, and Lefkada for reds. These ungrafted vines, planted in soils ranging from crystalline gypsum to limestone and quartz, contribute to the wines' distinctive character. A visit to Makarounas Vineyards offers a chance to explore the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and sample the estate's offerings. The tasting room provides a cozy setting to savor the wines, often paired with local delicacies. The winery's commitment to quality and authenticity makes it a celebration of Cypriot culture and hospitality. Makarounas produces around 110,000 bottles annually, with a focus on organic practices and minimal intervention. The vineyards, situated at an altitude of 400-600 meters, benefit from the Mediterranean climate and the moderating influence of the surrounding hills and valleys.
