Discover more about Fabrika Hill Cave Complex- Megalithic site

Fabrika Hill Cave Complex, nestled in the heart of Paphos, Cyprus, is a captivating historical site that invites visitors to step back in time and explore the island's multifaceted past. Often referred to as Fabrika Hill, Pafos Caves, or Pafos Catacombs, this complex is more than just a collection of caves; it's a sprawling network of man-made caverns and catacombs that whisper tales of ancient civilizations and religious refuge. Originally, the site served as catacombs during the Hellenistic period, dating back to the 3rd century BC and earlier. Imagine the souls laid to rest within the small cavities carved into the limestone, a cemetery from a bygone era. As the Romans rose to power, these catacombs were expanded and transformed into cave homes for Christians fleeing persecution. The large complex provided shelter for hundreds, if not thousands, seeking refuge from the Roman authorities. Today, visitors can wander freely through the labyrinthine passages, exploring the nooks and crannies that once housed families seeking solace. The caves are safe to explore during the day, and the experience offers a unique glimpse into the lives of those who sought refuge within these walls. The site includes the ruins of the Roman Theatre Agios Lambrianos amphitheater, an ancient mosaic, and a small cave temple Agios Agapitikos. All this is located on Mount Fabrika, and you can see them during a simple walk along its paths and Catacombs. On top of Fabrika Hill, the remains of a Hellenistic building offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The ancient theatre on the southern slope of Fabrika Hill, built around 300 BC, is a testament to the area's rich history. Used for over six centuries, the theatre reached its peak in the middle of the 2nd century AD, during the rule of Emperors Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. During this time, the stage and entrances were adorned with marble sculptures and inscriptions. Around the theatre, excavations have revealed parts of the ancient town, including a paved road from the Roman period and a Nymphaeum, or public fountain. These elements provide valuable insights into the urban surroundings of ancient Nea Paphos.
