Discover more about Troodos Forest

The Troodos Forest, the backbone of Cyprus, encompasses a vast area of approximately 90,000 acres and was declared a National Forest Park in 1992. This designation aimed to preserve the area's ecological, scientific, recreational, hydrological, and economic significance. Rising from the heart of the island, the Troodos Mountains offer a cool respite from the coastal plains, with Mount Olympus, its highest peak at 1,952 meters, providing panoramic views. The forest is a geological marvel, known for its undisturbed ophiolite sequence, a result of the collision between the African and European tectonic plates. This unique geology has made Troodos a subject of scientific study, offering insights into the Earth's mantle. The area's rich mining history, dating back to ancient times, provided copper and timber for shipbuilding and weaponry. Today, the Troodos Forest is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Ten well-maintained nature trails wind through the park, one of which is designed to be accessible by wheelchairs, offering varying levels of difficulty and showcasing the region's diverse flora and fauna. The forest is home to around 750 plant species, including 72 endemic to Cyprus, as well as a variety of animal life, including foxes, hares, and endemic birds. Beyond its natural beauty, the Troodos Forest is steeped in history and culture. Byzantine churches and monasteries, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites, dot the landscape, offering a glimpse into the island's rich religious heritage. These sites served as safe havens during the Byzantine era, दूर from coastal raids, and became centers of religious art. Visitors can explore the Troodos Geopark Visitor Centre and the Troodos National Forest Park Visitor Centre to learn more about the region's geology, history, and natural environment. The park also offers various facilities, including picnic sites, camping grounds, and visitor centers, ensuring a comfortable and enriching experience for all.
