History of Lipno Dam

The Vltava Valley Before the Reservoir

Before the dam was built, the upper Vltava flowed through a settled South Bohemian landscape of villages, farmsteads, meadows and wooded slopes. Communities around what is now the reservoir were connected by local roads, agriculture, forestry and river transport rather than by a large body of standing water. The area formed part of the wider Šumava borderland, whose cultural history was shaped by Czech- and German-speaking communities, changing political boundaries and rural economies. Several settlements and parts of villages were affected when the reservoir was created, leaving the modern shoreline as a striking example of how twentieth-century infrastructure altered an inhabited landscape.

The Lipno Dam Project

The Lipno hydroelectric scheme was constructed on the Vltava during the 1950s, with the principal dam works completed in 1959. The project created a large reservoir to regulate water flow and generate electricity, supported by a hydroelectric power station associated with Lipno nad Vltavou. Much of the main power plant is located underground, reflecting the engineering demands of working in the narrow upper Vltava valley.
