Discover more about Franciscan Gardens

The Franciscan Gardens, nestled in Prague's New Town, offer a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant energy. Founded in 1347, alongside a Franciscan monastery, the gardens have evolved from a space for monastic contemplation and medicinal herb cultivation to a publicly accessible oasis. Throughout their history, the gardens have witnessed periods of upheaval and transformation. Originally belonging to the Carmelites, the Franciscans took custody in 1604, cultivating flowers, trees, and spices. The gardens were later opened to the public in 1950 after the Communist takeover. Today, a small portion has been returned to the Franciscans. Visitors can stroll along winding paths, admire the colorful flowers and lush greenery, relax on benches, or enjoy the children's playground. The gardens also feature a small fountain, herb beds, and a café. Architectural treasures such as the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, and remnants of the former Franciscan monastery are nearby. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows, dominating the northern edge of the gardens, began construction in the 14th century, though it remains unfinished. The Franciscan Gardens offer a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty, providing a serene retreat for locals and tourists alike.
