Getting there

Walking

If you arrive in Radkov by bus or car, the castle is approximately a 1 km walk. Exit the bus or parking area and head towards the main road. Follow the signs for the castle, enjoying the views of the surrounding countryside. The walk is pleasant and takes about 30 minutes from the village center. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Public Transport

To reach Vikštejn Castle via public transport, start from Opava. Take a bus from Opava bus station to Krnov, which takes approximately 30 minutes. From Krnov, transfer to another bus that goes to Radkov; this bus ride takes around 15 minutes. Once in Radkov, the castle is a short, 1 km walk away. Bus fares from Opava to Krnov and Krnov to Radkov typically cost around 30-50 CZK per segment.

Car

If driving from Opava, take road E442 towards Krnov. After about 20 km, exit towards Hranice/Bruntál and merge onto road 11. Continue for approximately 25 km until you reach Radkov-Melč. Follow the signs to Vikštejn Castle, located at 747 84 Radkov-Melč. Free parking is available near the castle. Note that parking might be limited during peak season.

Vikštejn Castle, located near Radkov-Melč, stands as a testament to the turbulent history of the Moravian-Silesian region. Founded in the mid-13th century by Vítek of Kravaře, the castle's first written mention dates back to 1377. Over the centuries, it was owned by Opava princes and various noble families.Vikštejn played a strategic role in regional conflicts, suffering damage during battles between Czech King George of Poděbrady and Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus. It was later conquered and damaged by Danish and Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War. In 1648, the imperial army deliberately blew up the castle to prevent it from becoming an enemy stronghold.Today, visitors can explore the preserved ruins, including remains of walls and stone arches. The site offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape of the Low Jeseník mountains and the Moravice River. The mysterious catacombs beneath the castle add an extra layer of intrigue. Hiking trails around the castle provide opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the area.
