Founded in the mid-13th century by Vítek of Kravaře, the castle's first written mention dates back to 1377. Over the centuries, it was owned by Opava princes and various noble families. Vikštejn played a strategic role in regional conflicts, suffering damage during battles between Czech King George of Poděbrady and Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus. It was later conquered and damaged by Danish and Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War. In 1648, the imperial army deliberately blew up the castle to prevent it from becoming an enemy stronghold. Today, visitors can explore the preserved ruins, including remains of walls and stone arches.
