Discover more about Silesian Ostrava Castle

The Silesian Ostrava Castle, a significant historical monument in Ostrava, stands at the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers. Originally built in 1290 by Duke Mieszko I of Cieszyn as a Gothic castle, it served as a royal stronghold and a defensive structure against Moravia. In 1534, it was rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau, with remnants of this transformation still visible. The castle's history took a dramatic turn due to extensive coal mining beneath it, causing the structure to sink by 16 meters and fall into disrepair from the 18th century onwards. However, a comprehensive renovation completed in 2004 revitalized the castle, opening it to the public for exhibitions, tours, and various cultural and social events. Visitors can explore the castle's courtyard, fortress, and tower, and also enjoy exhibitions detailing the history of the castle, town and region. The castle cellars feature an aquarium with freshwater fish and a museum of witches and torture. The castle tower provides panoramic views of Ostrava. The site hosts events like festivals, concerts, and fairs, enhancing its appeal as a cultural hub.
