Discover more about Latrán

Latrán, derived from the Latin word 'latus' meaning 'side' or 'lateral,' aptly describes its historical position outside Český Krumlov's main center. This district, predating the inner town, developed organically beneath the castle, along the Vltava River's left bank. For centuries, Latrán functioned as a distinct entity, finally integrated in 1555. Historically, Latrán was primarily inhabited by individuals crucial to the castle's operation rather than nobility. Over time, its character evolved, and today, Latrán thrives as a bustling street brimming with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Visitors can explore architectural gems showcasing Gothic and Renaissance styles. Noteworthy landmarks include the Budějovická Gate, the only surviving town gate, and the Red Gate, which marks the entrance to the castle's first courtyard. A massive arch spans Latrán near the Red Gate, housing a corridor connecting the castle to the former Minorite monastery. Walking Latrán offers a journey through time, revealing the town's rich history and architectural evolution. From its humble beginnings as a service district to its current status as a vibrant thoroughfare, Latrán remains a vital and captivating part of Český Krumlov.
